It has been SO long since I’ve sat down to physically write a blog post. I’ve honestly had this particular post in mind for over a month now because I had wanted to start showcasing some of my fun and unique weddings and couples while winter was my “slow” season. But guess what…it never really got SLOW! Basically, I caught up from the debacle that was my old computer shriveling up and dying a slow painful death during my most insane time of year (AKA fall), then real life got busy, and finally tax season came and I had to get my crap in order! Now we’re already in the throws of 2018 wedding season – first wedding was last weekend, and panic has set in for the winter plans I had planned but didn’t bring to fruition. Oops!
This week’s beautiful post is showcasing Ashley & Travis Miss. They were my amazing mid-summer wedding that was held at the ever-gorgeous Weller’s in Saline, Michigan. I was last here about 4 years ago as I was beginning my wedding photography journey, so to be back and utilizing completely different aspects of the venue was such a treat. Weller’s is set back along the River Raisin that runs through the quaint town of Saline. Weller’s even has a “hospitality house” for the bride, groom, and their gentlemen and ladies to get ready! The bride had the main floor with the best ambient lighting for hair and makeup, and the gentlemen were upstairs in a bungalo-type feeling apartment style level.
Now, for this post, I asked Ashley and Travis to give me a little insight to their relationship and they did not disappoint!!! So, from their words, I give you the love story of Mr & Mrs Miks.
How we met: Travis and I met through his psychologist Melissa that he was arranged to see post Marines. I had met her when she was my customer at Outback. Being a psychologist, she was very easy to talk and open up to. I had told her of my recent bad relationship and how I was so over guys at that point. She had been in again and I recognized her so I went over to talk to her even though she wasn’t my customer at the time. It was then when she told me she had this really cute guy for me to talk to… So there I was, writing my number down in a napkin for her to give to him. A week later I was going home after my shift and there was a text from Travis, and the rest is history.
Proposal: it was when I still lived in Novi and he lived in Ypsi. It was a Friday in June and I had gotten off a little earlier that day. I always drove out to his place Friday’s after work so I was extra excited to get there a bit earlier this Friday. Travis helped me with my overnight bag as usual and we walked in to his apartment. As soon as I walked in there were balloons everywhere with pictures of us attached to each one. I was in shock… I knew what was happening but I was so giddy. He had an adorable little speech and I of course said yes! We called family and went out to celebrate after 🙂
Best part of wedding day: This is really hard to choose… It would have to be a tie between the whole leading up to the ceremony in the hospitality house. It was so amazing to be getting ready with everyone ad just enjoying each other, all while I had butterflies in my stomach the whole morning I cause Travis and his guys were just above on the second floor. Having to tell them to hide Travis while Tiffany took the portrait pictures outside before we headed to ceremony. It’s just an indescribable feeling that I will never forget. The other favorite part would have to be the first dance and the dancing with everyone. Such an amazing feeling when all the stress is over and we could just celebrate.
Advice: I would say try and relax but let’s be honest that’s not gonna happen. I would say make sure you focus/stress/spend the extra money on the things that really matter. Photographer, dj, dress/venue. I’m not just saying this because Tiffany is awesome but do not skimp out on photography. The photos are all you have when it’s all said and done. It is worth the money. Part of me wishes I had gotten a video too but I am very happy with all my photos. Dj is also very important. Pay extra for a very experienced one. I had Dave Ruffo from Encore Sounds and we was so easy to work with and just took care of everything because he really knows what he’s doing.
My point: don’t stress about all the little details…. Cake… Yeah it should be good but don’t worry that much, linen color at the venue, earrings, shoes, alcohol… Just make the decisions that cause I promise the very small details won’t even be on your mind that day. Also, Take in the anticipatory moments…. I took a ton of deep breaths and closed my eyes at certain moments to make mental memories. Also- save enough money for honeymoon… We spent so much on wedding and weren’t able to have the honeymoon I really wanted.
